Austria's showpiece toll road to a glacier viewpoint at 2500 m.

The Grossglockner road was built to be ridden slowly and looked at: thirty-six hairpins, a museum at the top and the Pasterze glacier at the end of the Franz-Josefs-Höhe spur. It is a toll road with published opening hours, and the gates close overnight - a late start can leave you locked out.
Bruck an der Glocknerstrasse is where the day begins. Next is Fuscher Törl, climbing 1671 m.
You top out at 2428 m here. The road climbs 1671 m on the way up to it, steeply. Reckon on about 11 °C colder than the valley, and more in the wind. At this height the road is a summer one: snow gates can stay shut into June and shut again in October. Next is Hochtor.
2504 m, and the road stops climbing. Nothing on this route is higher. Next is Franz-Josefs-Höhe.
Franz-Josefs-Höhe, about halfway at 2369 m. Reckon on about 10 °C colder than the valley, and more in the wind. Next is Heiligenblut, mostly downhill.
Heiligenblut is the finish, 48 km from Bruck. The descent from Hochtor drops about 1,068 m in a series of long, open hairpins - take it on engine braking rather than the brakes, and expect cyclists and coaches on the inside line.
